The Cans Festival 2008 - Sidewalk ViewHarumph! Europe gets all the fun stuff! This year’s “Cans” Festival was help under Waterloo station and was an orgy of art. Artist from all over could come and leave their mark on the walls and sidewalks. Take up a paint bruch, spray can, markers, pretty much anything you can find and go to town. There was even a guy playing a piano in the tunnel! Art is a boundless medium.

Thanks Justin for another great post over at Big Head Design. Next year we plan the trip to Euoropeville and get OUR mark on the streets… literally!

The relationship between agency and client…

nullAny designer who knows their place in the word of agency living knows that there’s that ugly separation between sales, design and management. There is always going to be someone trying to make the sale and promise aspects of design to clients at the minimal cost, because, hey, they need to make the sale. There’s always going to be management telling you that now the sale is made you have to manage to deliver in the time frame that they also promised client X. And lastly there’s the designers who have to take the foot of sales and management and deliver on the goods. In a perfect world there would be a great seamless line of open communication, but in the REAL world everyone’s “too busy” to make time to find out exactly what a client wants, which leads us to our good old friend “revision”. How ya doing buddy??

Thanks again Justin at Big Head Design. You never fail to deliver the goods! Must have been a slow morning for you.

Creative advertising: concept to execution

Creative Advertising - Use only what you needEvery designer has heard the tired old expression “form follows function”. Well, the following designers took that and tossed it out the window. This is more Function follows form. Every one of these was designed with surroundings in mind, materials accounted for and logistics calculated. The agencies that produced these must have made a buck or two in their days of glory.

To read more about these advertisements check out Big Head Design and Toxel. Thanks again for another great post Jusin at BHD.

In a perfect world of design

Blogging… browsing… clicking… end of the internets… la di da dee da… khaaaaaaaaaaan… lolcats… GOLD!

Justin over at Big Head Design has found the designers’ credo, or mantra if you will. In a perfect design world we could hit all 3 of these points; Speed, Quality, and Cost. In reality, it’s a bit different. There’s Speed and Cost, which doesn’t usually equal Quality (I’m talking Waterworld vs. Gigli here). Then there’s Speed and Quality, which doesn’t equal Cost (If you want something fast and good, then it’s not going to be cheap. Rush jobs = more money). And lastly there’s Quality and Cost, which means you won’t be getting your project for a while.

So, while all clients would love to think that their designer is the rare breed, the gem in the sack of stones, their “more than a designer, he’s a friend”… us designers still need to get paid for our services. There’s a balance of getting all 3 price points, and i’m sure if they money is right they can be hit. But our time is very valuable, and that’s a good thing.

As many freelancer/service providers will tell you, everybody wants top quality stuff on time and cheaply. OCDesignGuy posted this amazingly awesome story that reinforces the importance of not undervaluing ourselves for a sale.

“A client will ideally want all 3 of them, but it is almost impossible for us as service providers to give all of our client all 3 aspects while trying to stay sane and make a living.”
