As the tradition continues, the Churm challenges/competitions forge ahead. As seen here [Big Bad Wolf], and here [der Rattenfänger], this piece moves into the portfolio file as a mock ad design, despite it not being submitted for consideration. I’d designed a couple of ads and had gone with a second choice for the competition, though really liking the cleanliness of this “ad”.

As mentioned previously, the design group over at Churm media likes to have some creative fun in our “downtime”. Given nothing more than an objective and a few “must use” image files, the designers are set free to explore whatever they can come up with to achieve victory. This round the objective was simple, to create an ad using whatever theme you want and a selection of 4 must use images. And if memory serves me correct, I took the win this round with the ruling judgement of our awesome colleague judges.

I saw this ad on Dark Roasted Blend and couldn’t resist re-showing it to the world. For anyone who’s ever sat in traffic, this ad makes perfect sense! (I’d know, I live in Orange County, CA)

Any designer who knows their place in the word of agency living knows that there’s that ugly separation between sales, design and management. There is always going to be someone trying to make the sale and promise aspects of design to clients at the minimal cost, because, hey, they need to make the sale. There’s always going to be management telling you that now the sale is made you have to manage to deliver in the time frame that they also promised client X. And lastly there’s the designers who have to take the foot of sales and management and deliver on the goods. In a perfect world there would be a great seamless line of open communication, but in the REAL world everyone’s “too busy” to make time to find out exactly what a client wants, which leads us to our good old friend “revision”. How ya doing buddy??

Creative advertising: concept to execution

Every designer has heard the tired old expression “form follows function”. Well, the following designers took that and tossed it out the window. This is more Function follows form. Every one of these was designed with surroundings in mind, materials accounted for and logistics calculated. The agencies that produced these must have made a buck or two in their days of glory.

Title: Trigelle Women’s Golf Clothing Ad (Full Page Ad)

Client: Churm Media, in association with Southland Golf Magazine

Program(s) Used: Illustrator

Time Span: 2-4 Hours

About: The client, through proxy of Churm Media, wanted a new look for their company, with not a lot of direction other than a logo (*shudder, it’s papyrus) and their product/model photography.

Designer Notes: Using some free download organic brushes in Illustrator i was able to give the client a fresh look for their company. Keeping in mind that they are strictly women’s golf clothing really helped to choose a palette and theme… women love flowers!

Never in the US, Denmark ad design

Sadly, there’s some things we’ll never get away with in the US. Thank you censorship and ruining of my first amendment! But actually thank you internet for giving me the power to actually spread the design wealth of ads like these. The internet is GREAT for freedom of speech! TAKE THAT HIPPIES!

Why Me? has posted some hilarious ads from Live Poker Magazine. These ads show how something so controversial can really grab someone’s attention. They also have great photography and a simple headline in the bottom corner makes it so there’s no distraction from the ads themselves.

Time Span: 2-3 hours to completion

About: Wanted a fresh new look to compete with other clothing ads in their chosen advertising magazine (southland golf magazine). Direction was for something modern, cutting edge, with supplied logos and photography.

Designer Notes: Finally, an ad that has that “National” feel to it. This was the diamond in the rough of design assignments at Churm Media.
