Thank you economy! and Time Warner! 1¢ Movies!

timewarner_header
Any of you Southern California residents out there that may have taken a nice roundhouse kick to the left temple may appreciate this little slab of cold steak to nurse that wound! Time Warner Cable is offering 1¢ Movies on demand from a pretty decent selection of 30 movies through their On Demand service. Being a So Cal resident myself… and being a poor artist… i salute you Time Warner. We may have had our feuds in the past, like that one time when you locked up on my and fast forwarded my DVR all the way to the end of my show while i got a nice 2x speed, soundless viewing of Top Chef (and again during 24), but this totally wipes the slate clean. Thanks!

The service seems to be only on Valentine’s Day, but what else are you doing in So Cal? I mean, you could go to Morton’s Steakhouse any old night, right? Pfshhh.

Now, you may be asking yourself, “But, Luke, why are you promoting Time Warner Cable? That doesn’t have anything to do with design!” to which i would reply “You’re right, especially judging by that landing page, yuck! but, this is pure MARKETING genius.” Here’s a company that realizes that most of it’s viewers will be out of the house, or not watching television, so they give them a great incentive to keep the viewership high in the times when they predict it being low. All my speculation of course, but that’s why I’m featuring this, my dirty little secret is that i am in love with marketing.

Anyone in the design world has probably seen a pretty awesome design for a typographic word cloud. Well, Wordle.net has made it too simple to not try to build your own! It took me literally 2 minutes (or less if i wasn’t being picky) to build a simple word cloud from my sites RSS feed. Go ahead, give it a try. Leave me a comment to your saved gallery so i can take a peek! (or a screenshot if you’re savvy)

Quotes on Design, by designers

quotesondesign_header
Here’s an interesting site dedicated to Quotes on Designers. You can even add your own if you’d like.

Couple personal favorites:

  • Mieke Gerritzen – Good design goes to heaven; bad design goes everywhere.
  • Shunryu Suzuki – When you do something, you should burn yourself up completely, like a good bonfire, leaving no trace of yourself.
  • Jack Moffet – Broken gets fixed. Shoddy lasts forever.
  • John F. Kennedy – An error doesn’t become a mistake until one refuses to correct it.

UPDATE: RSS footer re-design… check.

rss_footer_capture_header
In my previous post (literally) i was toying around with my RSS feed footer. Trying to integrate the “community” of Design and networking that i have come to love. Well, i’m happy to report that all has worked. So if you’re a subscriber, i hope you enjoy the visuals (and don’t worry, they’re extremely low load time 12kb for the whole set) and if you’re not a subscriber (yet) then shame on you! haha. just kidding, but you should probably subscribe. i’ve been known to be called awesome. I’m just saying.

So, without further blabbering by me, here’s your american-idol-esque moment…. right after this jump!

EverSave may Ever Save my …

eversave_header1
Finally. someone has heard the plea of designers and programers across the world!! Everyone who works long hours slaving over a computer screen knows the “zone” in which saving becomes less and less important because you feel as if it will break your zen. I doubt it’s just me who feels this way. I’ve gone from concept to completion on a few project all the while forgetting that happy little command+S… and don’t get me wrong, it sure has bitten me in the ass on more than one occasion.

Scenario: Working on a magazine layout for Churm Media, still being stuck in Quark without the wonderful auto-recover features of InDesign, while being in the “zone” and working for 30 minutes plus to finally come up against the beach ball… the ohh-so-hated beach ball. So, i wait… hope… wait some more, only to have the next screen fade from my yes and the “send error report” window taunt me like a little demon who knows the failure of my non-saving ways. Flash forward to THIS little helper, EverSave.

EverSave… is a free application for the Mac which saves your documents on regular intervals based on your preferences. You can save on all applications or just a select few and most importantly it seems to work with any application!

Thank you SwissMiss [via The Next Web [via lifehacker [via Cool OSX Apps]]] for this AMAZING product… and it’s FREE!

Portfolio: Follow the yellow brick [tutorial] road

gelbutton_bird_header
My dear love for tutorial doage (yes, that’s now a word) keeps my skills sharp and my knowledge of all things graphic design high. I generally browse through the tutorials pages looking for something to catch my eye that gives me a sense of “how can i incorporate that into one of my Magazine layouts.” On this particular day i was looking through Photoshop Lady’s website to see what new and exciting things the graphic design community had come up with this week. Low and behold, there it was. A Gel Button effect in photoshop to rival MANY gel button tutorials on the “market”. And trust me, i’ve done many of them. Most of them good, and get you to the goal you’re set out for, but this one had so much glamour that i knew i’d have to see how it was accomplished. So, not to bore you with the details or to try and explain the steps i’ll just give you a link so you can test for yourself. All in all, once i got a subject for the ‘logo’, this tutorial took me about 5-10 minutes, then add another 5 for personal tweaks and adjustments.

So without further ado, here’s my rendition of the tutorial (via 3nhanced)…. after the jump [click image for full size].

Portfolio: An Ode to a Flickr user…

emo_ode_header
Playing my own little game of Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon led me to an image, which inspired this little “re-design” or complete design guessing how you interpret it.

Okay, now let’s explain… I was on my google reader (1), found a link through we heart it (2), Liked what one of the users was “hearting” and clicked through to his profile to find the original photo (3), which was a link through a ffffound site (4), via flickr user shaderlab (5). Pretty fun ehh? So, i have to give credit where credit is due. I didn’t QUITE get my full 6 degrees, but if you count opening the browser as 1 i can cheat my score a little i guess.

On a side note, the Oracle of Bacon website will let you play your own game of Six Degrees. I was never able to get more than a bacon score of 3!! So, if you play around with some names and happen to get a good combo, leave me a comment with the names.
